Roxanne Shante, born **Lolita Shante Gooden** on March 8, 1969, in Queens, New York City, is an American rapper and hip-hop icon. She first gained attention through the **Roxanne Wars**, a series of rap battles sparked by U.T.F.O.’s song “Roxanne, Roxanne.” Shante responded with her hit track **”Roxanne’s Revenge”** in 1984, making her one of the first female MCs to achieve mainstream success.
Throughout her career, Roxanne Shante released several albums, including **”Bad Sister”** (1989) and **”The Bitch Is Back”** (1992). She was also a member of the **Juice Crew**, a collective of hip-hop artists led by producer Marley Marl.
In 2017, her life story was dramatized in the film **”Roxanne Roxanne”**, starring Nia Long as Shante. Despite retiring from the music industry in the mid-1990s, she continues to be celebrated as a trailblazer for female rappers.
